The early Eocene is an important time in Cenozoic history because it marked the height of global warming, coincident with significant reorganization of the mammalian biota. In North America, our understanding of mammalian diversity during this interval is largely limited to a fossil record south of the 49th Parallel. New discoveries in the early Eocene Driftwood Creek beds (Ootsa Lake Group), northern British Columbia (∼55°N) double the known diversity of Eocene mammals from this Canadian province and provide a window into the mammalian community that lived near the northernmost lake of the Okanagan Highlands, a series of Eocene lake deposits extending north-south from Republic, Washington, to Smithers, northern British Columbia. A diverse insect and fish fauna has been described from Okanagan Highlands Eocene lake shales, together with a diverse flora, interpreted as a cool upland forested landscape. We report the tapiroid cf. Heptodon and an erinaceomorph lipotyphlan Silvacola acares, gen. et sp. nov., from the Driftwood Creek beds. Presence of cf. Heptodon is consistent with the late early Eocene age of the Driftwood Creek beds determined by radiometric dating and palynology. Heptodon is otherwise known from Eocene localities in Wyoming and Colorado as well as Ellesmere Island in the High Arctic, whereas erinaceids are recorded from late Paleocene sites in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the U.S. Western Interior and are relatively uncommon at Eocene sites in the U.S. Western Interior. Occurrence of cf. Heptodon at Driftwood Canyon supports the hypothesis proposed by others that tapiroids are proxies of densely forested habitats.

The scanilepiform ray-finned fish Fukangichthys longidorsalis, from the Middle Triassic non-marine Kelamayi Formation of Xinjiang, China, was previously described incompletely, with many of its morphological characteristics unnoticed or misidentified. This study provides a revision of this problematic taxon based on an extensive reexamination of the original fossil material. Newly recognized anatomical information includes a plate-like quadratojugal, a triangular dermohyal, a wedge-shaped angular, two infraorbitals, three supraorbitals, fringing fulcra on the pectoral fins, and conical, acrodin-capped teeth in the jaws. Results of a phylogenetic analysis confirmed Fukangichthys as a scanilepiform within the Neopterygii, and provided new insights into the evolution of early actinopteran fishes. Cosmoptychius, previously regarded as the oldest stemgroup neopterygian, and Brachydegma, previously hypothesized to be the oldest halecomorph, are here reinterpreted as a stem-group actinopteran and a stem-group neopterygian, respectively. Additionally, Discoserra, previously hypothesized in a position close to the Holostei/Teleostei split, is now recovered in a clade with Ebenaqua, Bobasatrania and Platysomus gibbosus, and is therefore phylogenetically distant from crown neopterygians. As a consequence, fossil candidates for divergence time calibrations within the Actinopteri require reconsideration.

We evaluate new lungfish remains from the Upper Cretaceous Quseir Formation in the Western Dessert of southern Egypt. Taxa include Lavocatodus protopteroides, L. humei, L. giganteus, and Protopterus nigeriensis. We treat Lavocatodus as members of Lepidosirenidae based on the presence of a well-defined medial articular surface, in the absence of a symphyseal surface of corresponding prearticular bones. Material of L. protopteroides represents the first example of an adult specimen, supporting the retention of the species as valid, and not a junior synonym of L. humei. Specimens of L. humei are the most abundant in the assemblage, and all exhibit the medial articular surface, a feature that is absent from specimens of Ceratodus; therefore, we reassign additional specimens of ‘C.’ humei to Lavocatodus. New specimens of L. giganteus extend the temporal and spatial ranges of the species (the type material of L. giganteus is from Paleocene deposits of In Farghas, Mali). Finally, a new specimen of Protopterus represents the oldest record of the genus in Egypt. The prearticular is confidently assigned to Protopterus based on the presence of only three ridges on the tooth plate, a medial symphyseal suture, a coronoid process, and a shallow tooth crown plus prearticular depth. We further assign it to P. nigeriensis based the length and merger of tooth ridges. Furthermore, the oldest Cenomanian specimens reported from the Sudan Wadi Milk Formation are assigned to P. nigeriensis, which would extend the temporal range of P. nigeriensis by roughly 14 Ma.

The true toad family Bufonidae is one of the most speciose and widespread clades of neobatrachian anurans. Despite being well represented in South America at present, bufonids have a poor fossil record on this continent. ‘Bufo pisanoi’ from Pliocene outcrops of coastal Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, is the only extinct South American bufonid taxon recognized to date. In this study, we investigated the validity of the putative diagnostic characters of this extinct species to confirm its taxonomic status based on revision of the holotype and referred material. Comparisons with several extant bufonid species led us to include the taxon represented by this fossil material within the Rhinella marina clade, close to R. arenarum. Further comparisons and a geometric morphometric analysis based on a relatively large sample of the latter species demonstrated that the morphology of ‘B. pisanoi’ falls within the variation range of R. arenarum. Therefore, we consider that the names ‘B. pisanoi’ and R. arenarum represent the same taxon, with the latter having priority. This work emphasizes the importance of considering intraspecific variation whenever possible, because this leads to a more rigorous approach to the identification of fossil specimens and tests the taxonomic value of different osteological characters.

We review the cranial morphology of the Late Carboniferous terrestrial tetrapod Gephyrostegus bohemicus from the coal deposits of the Nýřany Basin in the Czech Republic. Gephyrostegus is known from several skulls ranging in length from about 25 mm to about 58 mm (holotype). The narrow skull is about twice as long as wide and shows a well-ossified quadrate and articular, but no evidence of braincase ossification. Autapomorphic features include a pustular ornamentation on some skull table bones, and a plate-like tabular process exhibiting a fine dorsal pitting. Gephyrostegus shares with Bruktererpeton fiebigi (Late Carboniferous, Germany) the presence of low, anteromedially to posterolaterally orientated sharp ridges on the posteroventral surface of the vomer. It shares with seymouriamorphs a rectangular, transverse pterygoid process and closely packed, radially arranged rows of small denticles on the palate. A phylogenetic analysis retrieves Gephyrostegidae (Gephyrostegus, Bruktererpeton) as sister group to Seymouriamorpha, although this wider clade receives low bootstrap support.

Renewed field work in the Beardmore Glacier region of Antarctica has led to a new collection of tetrapod fossils from the upper member of the Fremouw Formation near Fremouw Peak. This locality records a sedimentary environment remarkably similar to that preserved at Gordon Valley, the only other locality known to preserve Cynognathus Assemblage Zone—equivalent taxa from Antarctica. Fossil bones are generally disarticulated and mixed with logs and reworked mudrock clasts, forming an intraformational channel-lag conglomerate. To date, very few bones of small-bodied taxa have been recovered from the upper Fremouw conglomerates, suggesting that they did not survive the reworking process. We use an apomorphy-based approach to record three previously unrecognized taxa from the upper Fremouw Formation: the dicynodont Angonisaurus, an indeterminate therocephalian therapsid, and an indeterminate crown-group archosaur. Combined with previous data, our work demonstrates that 10 distinct taxa can be recognized from the upper Fremouw, including two endemic temnospondyl species. Our recognition of Angonisaurus in the upper Fremouw Formation provides a new piece of evidence in favor of a correlation with the Cynognathus C subzone (uppermost Burgersdorp Formation) of South Africa and the Lifua Member of the Manda beds of Tanzania.

A new, exquisitely preserved specimen of a small mosasaur, referable to Mosasaurus missouriensis, is reported from the Bearpaw Formation (ca. 75 Ma, upper Campanian) of southern Alberta, Canada. Many calcified cartilaginous elements, including tracheal rings and the sternum, are preserved. The sternum most closely resembles that of Clidastes propython, bearing five shallow sternal rib facets on each side. Our comparative study of the new material with the holotype, referred material, and the genotype M. hoffmannii is congruent with the preexisting hypothesis that M. missouriensis and M. hoffmannii are phylogenetically more closely related to each other than to the other congeners, in spite of a temporal gap of nearly 10 million years between them. Also preserved with the mosasaur, inside its ribcage and around the specimen, are well-preserved aulopiform fish bones, including a skull. The fish skull is punctured and its centra truncated, suggesting macrophagy was employed by M. missouriensis despite the apparent lack of tooth wear. A sympatric specimen of Prognathodon overtoni is known to have consumed a sea turtle as well as fishes, and consistently exhibits apical wear across marginal teeth. We hypothesize that coexistence of these apex predators in the Bearpaw Sea was possible because of niche partitioning. Finally, the mosasaur carcass was likely scavenged by at least three lamniform sharks, based on their shed teeth and a series of truncated transverse processes on the mosasaur tail.

Caiman brevirostris was described based on the basis of late Miocene materials that included a rostral fragment and a right mandibular ramus, but photographs were not provided at that time. In this study, for the first time, we present the holotype materials of this species and a new specimen from the late Miocene of southwestern Amazonia, Brazil. The diagnosis was expanded, and a phylogenetic analysis was conducted. The results from the analysis consistently recover Caiman brevirostris within a clade that includes Caiman latirostris, Caiman cf. C. lutescens, and Melanosuchus. The oldest fossil record of the genus Caiman is from the Oligocene of southeastern Brazil, but these materials are regarded in this study as a nomen dubium due to the absence of any diagnostic features for the specimen. Thus, the oldest record considered valid by this study derives from the middle Miocene of Colombia and may represent the initial radiation of the genus.

Ankylosaurian systematics can be assessed using morphological, textural, and histological characters of osteoderms. Archosaur osteoderms have cortices surrounding cancellous cores. Ankylosaurs are united by an external cortex distinguishable from the core and by the presence of mineralized structural fibers. Nodosaurid osteoderms lack a well-developed basal cortex and have dense external cortical fibers. Ankylosaurid osteoderms are thinner than those of other ankylosaurs. Polacanthine osteoderms have a cancellous core, but share this feature with other derived and primitive taxa. Cortical thickness overlaps among groups, so a thick cortex is not diagnostic for polacanthines. Specialized elements diverge histologically from the primitive condition to suit their specific functions. Some shapes and external textures are diagnostic for specific taxa, such as Ankylosaurus and Glyptodontopelta. Parsimony analyses suggest osteodermal support for a monophyletic Polacanthinae (excluding Mymoorapelta) and Shamosaurinae.

Several histological studies have attempted to derive life history parameters of sauropod dinosaurs. However, verification of sexual maturity and growth rate has been impeded by strong remodeling in sampled sauropod long bones. Here, for the first time, histological variation in the rib cage of Camarasaurus sp. is studied based on a single, relatively small, mature individual. The focus is on the growth history of this individual and its implications for sauropod growth, age, and sexual maturity. Different bone tissue types were observed in different skeletal elements. The long bones show nearly completely remodeled fibrolamellar bone, whereas the ribs show primary zonal bone, with fewer secondary osteons. Histology reveals that the general direction of growth in the rib shaft was from proximal to distal. Therefore, the proximal end of the rib shaft, where growth originated, was determined to be the best sampling area in ribs, providing an almost complete growth record. This study provides the most complete growth record for a sauropod so far, and indicates that it took 40 years for Camarasaurus sp. to reach full size and 18–19 years to become sexually mature. These results show that the growth rate and the point of sexual maturity for a small sauropod are intermediate between the widely divergent previous estimates. With a larger database of rib samples from more individuals of different ontogenetic stages, this approach could yield growth curves for other sauropod taxa.

The braincase of Amargasaurus cazaui from the Lower Cretaceous of Argentina represents the only dicraeosaurid sauropod neurocranial material known from South America. It has been computer tomographically (CT) scanned and three-dimensional digital reconstructions of the endocranium and inner ear have been made. The cranial endocast is complete, with a volume of approximately 94–98 ml, excluding the dorsal sinuses. The labyrinth of the inner ear is dorsoventrally taller than the lagena, which is conical, and relatively short. The anterior semicircular canal is longer than the posterior and lateral semicircular canals, as in most non-titanosaurid sauropods. When the braincase is oriented with the lateral semicircular canal positioned horizontally, the occipital condyle is oriented posteroventrally, suggesting that the head was held with the muzzle pointing downward. The morphology of the atlas and axis, together with the reconstruction of the osteological neutral pose of the neck, supports this neck and head position, and also indicates the presence of the proatlas in this taxon. The evidence presented here for the skull and neck position of Amargasaurus fits with a midheight food-gathering strategy. The presence of titanosauriforms and rebbachisaurids, together with Amargasaurus, supports the niche partitioning hypothesis for the La Amarga Formation sauropods.

New specimens of a titanosaur sauropod from Maastrichtian strata in Big Bend National Park, Texas, include well-preserved dorsal vertebrae in association with pelvic elements. Anterior dorsal vertebrae are characterized by postspinal and centroprezygapophyseal laminae, with spinodiapophyseal laminae convergent on the anterior base of the neural spine. Posterior dorsal vertebrae are characterized by postzygodiapophyseal laminae and divided spinodiapophyseal laminae, with spinoprezygapophyseal laminae contributing to the prespinal lamina. The ilium and pubis differ from specimens previously collected, indicating a greater morphological disparity among titanosaurs in the Maastrichtian of West Texas than previously recognized. This disparity may be attributable to intraspecific variation or to the presence of multiple taxa. The new material is compatible with the only presently known North American titanosaur, Alamosaurus sanjuanensis, but is not formally referred due to lack of overlap with the hypodigm of that species. Comparison with other derived titanosaurs finds the closest affinities to Trigonosaurus pricei, Uberabatitan riberoi, and Baurutitan britoi of the Upper Cretaceous Brazilian Bauru Group, consistent with a South American immigration event at the end of the North American sauropod hiatus.

A giant caseid, Alierasaurus ronchii, gen. et sp. nov., is herein described, based on a partial postcranial skeleton collected from the Permian Cala del Vino Formation (Alghero, Nurra, northwest Sardinia). Despite the highly conservative morphology of ribs and vertebral material, typical of caseids, the very well-preserved foot elements show highly autapomorphic features, warranting assignment of the specimen to a new genus. In particular, the fourth metatarsal is not short and massive, as in other large caseids, and shows a distinct axial region. Finally, the claw-shaped ungual phalanges are autapomorphic in being proportionately very short, with a strong double ventral flexor tubercle positioned very close to the proximal phalangeal rim, and a distal end that is not spatulate, but rather subtriangular in transverse section. Principal component and reduced major axis slope analyses, performed on 10 caseid specimens, suggest that the observed changes in overall shape of metatarsal IV were mainly linked to the enormous body size reached by the Sardinian specimen.

We revise two avian fossils from the Miocene of Italy, which were described as anseriform birds by Alessandro Portis in 1884. One of these, the holotype of Chenornis graculoides, from the early Miocene of Ceva (Piemonte, northwestern Italy), is found to be a stem group representative of Diomedeidae (albatrosses), and is here classified as Plotornis graculoides, comb. nov. The fossil allows the recognition of previously unknown osteological details of Plotornis and is the first record of an albatross from the Mediterranean Sea. The second specimen, from the late Miocene of Montebamboli (Toscana, central Italy), was described as Anas lignitifila and is here recognized as a highly unusual anseriform that is transferred to the new taxon Bambolinetta. The species belongs to Anatinae but is outside a clade including Anatini, Mergini, and Aythyini. It is distinguished from all extant Anseriformes by unusually robust wing bones, and the ulna and radius appear to have been very short. The Montebamboli site was part of the Tusco-Sardinian Island in the late Miocene, and we consider it likely that Bambolinetta lignitifila was an insular species with reduced flight capabilities, possibly specialized for wing-propelled diving.

Anthracolestes sergeii, gen. et sp. nov., based on three isolated lower molars and several edentulous dentary fragments from the Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) Itat Formation at Berezovsk Quarry in Krasnoyarsk Territory, Russia, is the oldest and most basal representative of Dryolestidae. It shows four unambiguous synapomorphies of Dryolestidae: lower molars with unilaterally hypsodont crowns, unequal roots, and pronounced precingulid instead of cusp f, and dentary with unequal alveolar borders. The dental formula of the new taxon is i1–4, c (double-rooted), p1–4(?), and m1–4(?). Anthracolestes sergeii, gen. et sp. nov., is plesiomorphic relative to more derived and geologically younger dryolestids in having possibly fewer lower molars, less pronounced mesiodistal compression of lower molars, oblique protocristid, short mandibular symphysis, and shallow mandibular ramus of the dentary. Asia is most likely the place of origin for Dryolestidae, but this group is so far not known from that continent after the Middle Jurassic.

A new subadult partial skeleton of a pantolestid is reported from the late early Eocene Fossil Butte Member of the Green River Formation. Although the specimen displays a full permanent dentition, the presence of unfused elbow epiphyses (typically the first epiphyses to close), together with a short skull, shallow dentaries, and incompletely erupted third molars, indicates that it was a young juvenile. This adds to evidence that pantolestids had relatively early eruption of permanent premolars and late epiphyseal closure. Based on molar size and morphology, including presence of a well-developed paraconid, the specimen is attributed to Palaeosinopa didelphoides. Despite differences in skeletal size and robustness among the three known Fossil Butte pantolestid skeletons, all of which are skeletally subadult, similarity in molar size (and morphology, to the extent that it is visible) suggests that the three skeletons represent three growth stages of P. didelphoides. If this interpretation is correct, it has implications for recognition of fossil species based on such traits as jaw depth, presence/absence of diastemata, and relative robustness of skeletal features.

Notohippidae (Notoungulata) specimens from the late Oligocene Quebrada Fiera locality (Mendoza, Argentina) were previously identified as a new taxon, Mendozahippus fierensis Cerdeño and Vera. New cranial, mandibular, and postcranial remains allow enhanced description of this species and its ontogenetic variation. The ectocuneiform corresponding to the holotype (MCNAM-PV 4004) of M. fierensis was discovered when reexamining a block belonging to the sediment surrounding the holotype. It corresponds with the metatarsal III that was associated with the holotype skull. On the other hand, MCNAM-PV 3851, a poorly preserved maxillary fragment, is recognized as a second notohippid taxon, which differs from M. fierensis in the different position and relative size of I3—C. The canine is placed labially to P1 and its section shows a similar size to that of the latter; ahead of the canine, the preserved root of I3 is also labially placed, and its section is clearly larger than that of the canine. This condition differs from other Deseadan notohippids. Enlargement of the muzzle at the level of I3—C and a developed paracone on premolars are present in Eurygenium and Pascualihippus; the convergence of the premaxillae anterior to I3 in MCNAM-PV 3851 is closer to the condition in Eurygenium. The incompleteness of this specimen, however, prevents its proper definition and it is considered as Notohippidae indet.

We describe a new genus and species of early Oligocene halitheriine dugongid from the Western Atlantic region. Priscosiren atlantica, gen. et sp. nov., differs from all other halitheriine dugongids by displaying the following unique combination of characters: supraorbital processes dorsoventrally thin (≤1 cm) with well-developed prominent posterolateral corner; supraoccipitals wider in the dorsal half than the ventral half; exoccipitals meeting dorsal to the foramen magnum; posttympanic process with a prominent anteroventral process for attachment of m. sternomastoideus; nasals separated in midline; ventral extremity of jugal located ventral to orbit; ventral border of mandible strongly concave; absence of accessory mental foramina; dorsoventrally broad horizontal ramus of mandible; loss of all permanent premolars; and concave anteroventral surface of jugal (a possible autapomorphy). Differs further from the similar species Caribosiren turneri in having lesser rostral deflection (of about 44°); presence of small incisors; lower temporal crests; and slightly larger body size. The relationship of Priscosiren with other dugongids places it close to being a structural as well as temporal ancestor to the Metaxytherium Hydrodamalinae and Dugonginae clades. This supports previous assumptions of a Western Atlantic and Caribbean origin for these groups, and indicates that the halitheriine-dugongine divergence must have occurred no later than the earliest Oligocene. Priscosiren, Caribosiren, and Crenatosiren evidently coexisted in the West Atlantic-Caribbean region, and constitute yet another case of a uniquely patterned fossil sirenian multispecies community.
