Abstract

Thirty-three years after the last documented sighting of the round-tailed horned lizard (Phrynosoma modestum) in Oklahoma in 1990, we rediscovered the species in Oklahoma, documenting the presence of a hatchling round-tailed horned lizard from western Cimarron County on 24 September 2023. The animal was a live male, with a mass of 1.6 g, a snout–vent length of 35.0 mm, and a tail length of 8.0 mm, encountered on the edge of a paved road near Black Mesa State Park. After taking measurements and photographs, we released the lizard unharmed at its point of capture. Because it was a young hatchling, there presently appears to be a breeding population of the round-tailed horned lizard at that locality in Oklahoma.
