Abstract

The first and second instars of the malachiid Laius asahinai Nakane are described, with observations on the growth process from immediately before hatching onward. The first two instars are inactive and non-feeding with vestigial legs, very similar to the prolarva of other cantharid species. Laius asahinai shows foetometamorphosis, making it the second representative among coleopteran families to exhibit this form of development.
