Toledo (e-mail: toledo@oikos.unam.mx) are researchers at the Departamento de Ecología de los Recursos Naturales Instituto de Ecología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Morelia, Michoacán, 58190, Mexico. Castillo has spent 15 years promoting public understanding of science in Mexico. She studies the nature of applied ecology and the role of communication in the use of scientific information. For more than 20 years, Toledo has studied the interaction between indigenous rural communities and the maintenance and use of biodiversity.
